This document describes the emerging gap between public and private sector absence rates in the UK. Absence from work cost the UK economy £13.2 billion last year as the average employee took almost seven (6.7 days) off sick, while the gulf between absence rates in the public sector and the private sector grew to a record level. • 23/10/2009- Absenteeism in the Irish Civil Service
The Comptroller and Auditor General’s office published the first report since 1986 on absenteeism levels in the Irish Civil Service in 2007. It revealed that almost 60% of staff took at least one sickness absence day that year and that clerical officer grade staff took an average of 16 days sickness absence per year. 5% of all absences were of 20 days duration or longer, but these accounted for almost half of the total number of sick days. Women had a higher rate of absence than men. The report is due to be published on the Comptroller and Auditor General’s website in the near future.
  • 17/03/2009- SLAN Survey of Lifestyle, Attitudes and Nutrition in Ireland - Mental Health and Social Well-being
This report presents the main findings on the mental health and social well-being of Irish adults from the 2007 Survey of Lifestyle, Attitudes and Nutrition (SLÁN 2007). The SLÁN 2007 survey, commissioned by the Department of Health and Children, involved face-to-face interviews at home addresses with 10,364 respondents (62% response rate), aged 18 years and over; full details are given in the SLÁN 2007 Main Report (Morgan et al, 2008). This sample was representative of the general population in Ireland and was further weighted, for the purpose of analysis, to match the Census 2006 figures. SLÁN 2007 is, therefore, the largest national survey to date on the extent of both positive and negative mental health and social well-being in the Irish adult population.
